Garbage collection

The City of Elliot Lake works with GFL Environmental to facilitate weekly garbage pickup on Tuesdays. Garbage typically includes household litter; trash; table and kitchen waste (whether animal or vegetable, fish, fruit and dairy products); boots; shoes; clothing; broken glass; metal and plastic.

Garbage collection schedule

We collect garbage through our curbside pickup program every Tuesday. Please ensure your garbage is ready by 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday mornings.

Garbage storage

Place all garbage in a proper plastic or metal can with a secure, watertight lid. The can must be able to store all your garbage easily with no overflow. Store garbage throughout the week in a secure place, such as inside the house, in a secure shed or garage.

You shouldn't place a can larger than 44 pounds (20 kg) or larger than 80 litres on the curb. Do not let garbage accumulate past one week. Do not use private dumpsters belonging to others to dump your garbage. This is the law.

Items you cannot throw in the garbage

We will not collect the following items during garbage collection.

Landscape and yard debris (except during the scheduled fall leaf collection)
Plant materials, such as grass clippings, plant clippings, leaves, roots and branches
Ashes
Carcasses or parts of any animal, with the exception of kitchen waste
Biochemical waste, such as bandages, animal or human tissue or organs, poultices, medicines or syringes
Building materials or building rubbish
Compressed gas cylinders and explosive or incendiary materials
Hay, straw or manure
Human excrement
Biological, toxic or hazardous waste
Rags soaked in oil, gasoline or any other flammable substance
Swill, organic matter not drained or wrapped, or liquid waste
Automotive parts

Leaf/Yard waste collection day

Each year, we operate a Residential Leaf Collection Day.

Leaf and Yard Waste Curbside Collection Day info for 2026 will be posted when it is available.

Leaves must be in a paper bag and placed at the curb no later than 7:30 am on the morning of collection.

Only leaves will be collected. Large branches, scrap metal or other yard waste will not be collected.

Elliot Lake Landfill

The Elliot Lake Landfill is open to the public during our regular hours. You can dispose large items and items that are not collected during our weekly, curbside garbage collection.

Location

You can find the landfill on Scott Road which is located near the intersection of Esten Drive North and Pearson Drive. (See Google Maps view at bottom of page)

Sundays and Holidays	Closed

Fee structure

Our landfill operates on a weight based tipping fee structure. We weigh each vehicle at the times of your entrance and exit to determine the weight of the waste you deposited during your visit.

Recycling

As of May 31, 2025, Elliot Lake’s recycling program will be managed by Circular Materials,
a national not-for-profit organization that is committed to building an efficient and effective recycling system in Ontario.

Please ensure that your recyclable materials are properly placed at your curb in your Blue Box by 7:00 a.m. each collection day.

Recycling schedule

A physical version of the Recycling schedule is mailed to each household in Elliot Lake at the beginning of the year. A digital version can also be found at the top of this page.

Recycling items are classified into 2 main groups,
“C” items (Comingle items like Plastic, Metal and Glass) and
“F” items (Fibre items like Cardboard and Newspaper).

Each class of item is picked up every 2 weeks on an alternating schedule. So for example, if C items are picked up this week, then F items will be picked up next week and then C items will be picked up the next week and so on.

Symbol C (Comingle)

Glass bottles and jars - Remove the lids of clear and coloured food and beverage containers and place them loosely in the blue box. Place your lids in the garbage.
Metal food and beverage containers - Dispose of steel and aluminum food and beverage cans, aluminum trays and foil into the blue box, loosely. Steel lids or jar lids can be placed with the metal food products. Please rinse or remove lids from each container and place them in the blue box.
Plastic bottles and jars - Dispose of all containers marked with the symbols 1 through 6 loosely into your blue box. These include plastic pop bottles, water bottles, soap, anti-freeze, laundry detergent and bleach bottles. We do not accept broken glass, window panes or dishes, Styrofoam or bread/milk/grocery and chip bags.

Symbol F (Paper and Fibre)

Newspaper, magazines, household fine paper, catalogues and telephone books - Place all materials securely in your blue box. These materials also include advertising inserts and flyers, mailed letters, coloured writing paper and photocopy paper and envelopes. No carbon or tissue is accepted.
Corrugated cardboard - Please flatten and bundle all corrugated cardboard (layered boxes with a ripple between layers) and place them loosely in your blue box. Boxes cannot be bigger than 30"x30".
Boxboard - This material includes cereal, detergent, shoe boxes and boxed food. Remove liners, flatten and place securely in a large boxboard. You can place cardboard and boxboard together loosely in your blue box.

Blue Box tips

Follow these simple Blue Box tips for an easy recycling experience:

Keep newspaper separate from cardboard.
Flatten and bundle boxes.
Rinse cans and bottles thoroughly before placing them in the Blue Box.
Keep glass separate to one side to avoid broken glass.
Do not place broken glass or shards in the Blue Box.
Place steel lids and jar lids in their bottles or jars to keep them together.
Place cardboard and boxboard together.
Place anything with a 'recycle' symbol in your Blue Box, if possible.

Located at the Elliot Lake Landfill on Scott Road behind the gated area
Hours of operation are similar to the landfill hours of operation
There is a total of 21 (4 cubic yard) recycling bins that residents and local businesses have access to, allowing them to dispose of all recyclable materials

E-Waste can be disposed of at the City Dump's designated drop off point located at the entrance to the landfill before the weigh scales and after the gate beside the attendant shack.

When you recycle through the Recycle My Electronics program, you're helping to ensure the safe and secure destruction of personal data stored on hardware.
Make sure you:

Clear all personal information from computers, cell phones and electronics prior to drop off.
Ensure all memory storage areas have been cleared of private information.
