As we recognize Disability Pride Month this July, the City of Elliot Lake invites residents to learn more about the symbolism behind the Disability Pride Flag. Redesigned in 2021 to be fully accessible for individuals with photosensitive epilepsy and sensory processing disorders, the flag features five vibrant diagonal stripes over a dark charcoal background.

The charcoal field represents mourning and resilience, while the straight diagonal stripes symbolize solidarity and "cutting through" societal barriers. The five colors represent the vast spectrum of the community: Red (physical disabilities), Gold (neurodiversity), White (invisible and undiagnosed disabilities), Blue (psychiatric disabilities), and Green (sensory disabilities). By recognizing these symbols, we reaffirm our local commitment to breaking down physical, attitudinal, and systemic barriers to ensure equitable access for all residents.
