Ruben Yli-Juuti Centre Update – October 29, 2025

On October 15th, 2025 City Staff along with City insurance adjusters as well as numerous representatives from companies that contributed to the Pool renewal project held a site meeting at the Ruben Yli-Juuti Centre in order to investigate a pump failure which occurred in July 2025 causing a damaging acid spill and the subsequent closing of the facility. Investigators collectively observed and recorded damage to the plant room infrastructure and also conducted a destructive test on the pump – an exercise to help determine the cause of the pump failure. Pumps from the facility have been removed and taken to a laboratory for further testing. A report of the findings will be issued once the laboratory testing has been completed.

Since this site meeting, City Staff have emphasized the urgency of this matter to our insurance adjusters as staff cannot begin to repair the pool until the investigation has completed. Our sense of urgency is for 2 main reasons. The first is determining if a corrosive environment remains in the pool’s plant room which could continue to cause damage to the equipment, the second is having the pool back open and running as soon as possible.

City Staff are continuing discussions with all involved parties and hope that this situation can be resolved as soon as possible so that repairs can begin.
More updates on the situation will be given as they become available.
