Ruben Yli-Juuti Centre Update - December 10, 2025
During the December 8, 2025 City of Elliot Lake Council Meeting City Staff provided an update to council regarding the repair work being done at the Ruben Yli-Juuti Centre following the acid leak in the Pool’s Mechanical Room.
Following the incident, Staff worked with a specialized group to preserve and stabilize the mechanical room equipment to prevent any further corrosion from occurring. Once preservation steps were completed City Staff and contractors reviewed the equipment to determine what needed replacing. Orders have since been placed for all electrical equipment that was damaged from the acid leak and work is continuing to determine any other components of the system that may need replacing.
Staff have also redesigned a portion of the mechanical room to allow for the chlorine tanks to be held in a separate, dedicated storage room to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Based on recommendations from contractors and consultants, Staff have also approved the transition of the pool from an acid-based system to a CO₂ system. CO₂ is a safer and more reliable method for balancing the pool’s pH levels and poses a significantly lower risk to both Staff and equipment. Installation of the CO₂ system was completed last week.
Staff and contractors remain committed to completing all required mechanical and electrical repairs and are actively working with the appropriate authorities to secure necessary approvals.
Efforts continue to progress toward the safe reopening of the pool.
