Reminder to be Bear Wise this Spring
Spring is Here and that means Black Bears and other animals will be waking from hibernation. Animals waking up from hibernation are faced with a scarcity of natural food sources, leading them to look for food in garbage cans and bird feeders.
Here are some Bear Wise tips to remember this season...
- As per Bylaw 05-74 garbage must be placed in sealed plastic bags in metal or plastic containers with a secured lid and placed outside no earlier than 6am on collection day. Your garbage can should be retrieved no later than 8pm on the same day
- Wash your garbage cans to help reduce their smell
- Store your garbage in an area where bears will not be able to smell or access it until collection day
- Clean your barbecue after use so that animals are not attracted to the food smell
Who to Call?
- Emergency: Call 911 or local police if the bear is an immediate threat to someone’s safety.
