2026 Ontario Senior of the Year Award Presentation

Every year, the Ontario Senior of the Year Award gives us the distinct privilege of honoring a senior in our community who has enriched the lives of others and made Elliot Lake a better place to live.

This year, it is my honor to present the 2026 Senior of the Year Award to a gentleman whose lifelong dedication to our youth, our schools, and our community defines the very best of Elliot Lake: Mr. Mike Marcella.

Many of you know Mike from his years as a deeply dedicated teacher at Our Lady of Fatima School. While retirement marks the end of a career for some, for Mike, it was simply the beginning of a new chapter of selfless service. He never truly left Fatima School; instead, he stepped up as a vital volunteer.

Whether he is arriving early to run the school breakfast program, coaching student tournaments, or handing out awards to celebrate the achievements of students and teachers at the end of the school year, Mike remains a pillar of support for our local youth.

But his impact stretches far beyond the classroom walls. On the diamond, he can be found umpiring baseball, ensuring our community recreation continues to thrive. Through his work with the Knights of Columbus, Mike works tirelessly to support families in need—including coordinating efforts to provide winter jackets so that no child in our community goes cold. Add to that his devoted time at his church and his hand in countless other local initiatives, and it becomes clear that Mike’s generosity knows no bounds.

Mike Marcella is truly an exceptional individual. His efforts benefit Elliot Lake every single day.
