Wildland Fire Training Course Coming to Elliot Lake Fire Department

Elliot Lake, ON – Structural Firefighters from Elliot Lake and along the North Shore will participate in training for protecting structures from wildfires on June 13 and 14.

As all-hazards responders, wildland-urban interface (WUI) firefighting is becoming an increasingly important part of the job for many fire departments across Canada. Wildland fires are growing threat to communities throughout Northern Ontario and across the country.

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), in partnership with the Elliot Lake Fire Department is presenting a training program that provides structural firefighters with comprehensive education and practical experience in wildland-urban interface response, incident command, strategy, and tactics.

The IAFF Responding to the Interface (RTI) course is designed to provide fire fighters and company officers a consistent basic understanding of safety, command and control, and strategy and tactics to use when fighting wildland fires. The training includes 10 one-hour online modules, one day of classroom instruction, and one day of hands-on field training hosted by the Elliot Lake Fire Department.

The RTI course is delivered by subject matter experts from across Ontario who bring extensive experience in wildland fire operations and incident management. With wildland fire seasons becoming longer and more complex, training programs such as RTI help ensure firefighters have the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to protect communities and respond safely and effectively to emerging threats.
