All property owners must abide by legislated property standards in the City of Elliot Lake. It is important to maintain your property so it is in working order and complies with the Ontario Building Code. Some examples include having proper plumbing and sewage systems, toilet and bathroom facilities, fire escapes, exterior doors and structural capacity.
Property Standards Order
If your property is found to be in violation of the City's property standards, you may receive a Property Standards Order from a Property Standards Officer. You must comply with the order, or you may make an appeal to the Property Standards Committee.
Property Standards Committee
You may make an appeal to the Property Standards Committee if you have received a Property Standards Order. The committee has the powers and functions of the officer making the order, and are able to:
- Confirm, modify or rescind the order to demolish or repair
- Extend the time for complying with the order
The committee's ruling ensures that the general intent and purpose of the by-law and Official Plan or policy statement in question remains upheld.
The committee is made up of the Mayor, three citizens of Elliot Lake, as appointed by Council, and the chief building official of the City, acting as secretary to the committee.
