Responding to COVID-19 in Elliot Lake

The City is following the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation and any updates regarding the City’s response to COVID-19 will be posted here. Frequently Asked Questions and updates on City services and facilities can be found at the bottom of this page.

4th Dose Boosters Available for People Aged 60+, Immunocompromised Individuals Aged 12+ and First Nation, Inuit and Métis Adults - Updated April 7, 2022

Starting April 7, 2022, the following groups can book an appointment to receive a fourth dose of the COVID-19 Vaccine:

  • Individuals 60 years of age and older
  • First Nation, Inuit & Métis Adults
  • Moderately to Severely Immunocompromised Individuals 12 years of age and older

While it is recommended that people wait 5 months between their third and fourth doses to maximize immunity, individuals can book a minimum of 3 months after their third dose. Please speak to a medical professional if you have questions about when you should get your fourth dose.

COVID-19 vaccines remain the most effective way to prevent severe illness or death. Vaccines are available through Elliot Lake Family Health Team, Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall Pharmacy.

Please be respectful to people who choose to wear masks and stay home or seek medical attention if you are not feeling well. Free rapid test kits are also available at Rexall Pharmacy and Shopper's Drug Mart. For more information on these changes, please visit Ontario's COVID-19 Public Health Measures page.

Booster Shots Available for Youth Ages 12-17

Youth between the ages of 12-17 are now eligible to receive their COVID-19 booster dose after six months (168 days) from their second dose. To schedule an appointment, please contact the Elliot Lake Family Health Team, Shoppers Drug Mart or Rexall Pharmacy.

Upcoming Vaccination Clinics

The ELFHT is booking appointments for anyone wishing to receive their 1st or 2nd shot, booster (3rd dose), or children's vaccination. Appointments are encouraged but walk-ins are accepted. Please call 705-461-8882 to book your appointment, or email info@elfht.ca for more information.

Appointments are also available at select pharmacies:

  • Shoppers Drug Mart (220 Ontario Ave) - Call 705-848-7125, or visit their website to book your appointment.
  • Rexall Pharmacy (31 Nova Scotia Walk) - Call 705-848-2451, or visit their website to book your appointment.

If you have questions specifically related to the vaccine itself you can call Ontario’s Vaccine Information phone line: 1-888-999-6488 or visit Algoma Public Health's Vaccine Information landing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the current restrictions in Elliot Lake?
  • Mask/face covering is voluntary in most public indoor spaces. Mask/face coverings are still required in high-risk spaces including public transit, health-care facilities, long-term care homes and congregrate care settings.
  • Self-screening remains in place. Please monitor your health and if you are feeling sick stay home or seek medical attention.

What are the gathering/capacity limits?

There are currently no gathering or capacity limits. Social distancing is no longer required but recommended when possible.

Do I need a third dose (booster shot)? How do I get one?

COVID-19 booster doses are available from participating pharmacies, including Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall, or by calling the Elliot Lake Family Health Team at 1-705-461-8882 ext. 611 to book an appointment.

Emerging evidence suggests that although two doses of COVID-19 vaccine provide protection against severe disease and hospitalization from Omicron, vaccine effectiveness is reduced against this new variant of concern, and two doses of vaccine no longer provide strong protection against symptomatic infection. This means that people who have received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine can still be infected with the Omicron strain, and spread the infection to others.

How can I protect myself and my community against COVID-19?

  • Follow public health guidelines and provincial regulations.
  • All residents 70 years and older, as well as, those who are immunocompromised or living with chronic disease, should not leave their homes unless absolutely necessary.
  • Wear a mask and maintain 6 feet of physical distance from those outside your household.
  • Wash your hands frequently and do not touch your face.
  • Self-isolate if sick, getting tested, or instructed to by public health. Stay home, do not report to work or go shopping.
  • Get tested if experiencing any symptoms. Call the COVID-19 Assessment Centre to book an appointment at 705-461-8882.
  • Test yourself if you're not feeling well. Free rapid test kits are available at Shopper's Drug Mart and Rexall Pharmacy.

Where can I book a vaccine appointment?

  • The Elliot Lake Family Health Team
    • Anyone age 5+ who has not received a first or second dose can call the Family Health Team at 705-461-8882 to book an appointment or find information on their drop-in clinics.
  • Shoppers Drug Mart (220 Ontario Ave) - Call 705-848-7125, or visit their website to book your appointment.
  • Rexall Pharmacy (31 Nova Scotia Walk) - Call 705-848-2451, or visit their website to book your appointment.

Where can I get tested for COVID-19 in Elliot Lake?

Call the COVID-19 Assessment Centre to book an appointment at 705-461-8882. Alternately, free rapid antigen test kits are available at Rexall Pharmacy and Shoppers Drug Mart. Supply is limited so please call first to inquire.

How long do I have to self-isolate if myself or a member of my household contracted COVID-19?

  • Vaccinated people and children under the age of 12 who are sick with COVID-19 will only be required to self-isolate for a minimum of 5 days. Their household contacts will also be required to isolate alongside them. If, after five days, their symptoms have improved for at least 24 hours, they can end the isolation period.

  • Close contacts of people with COVID-19 who are fully vaccinated, asymptomatic and who don't live with the positive case, won't have to self-isolate at all. Instead, they're being advised to self-monitor for symptoms and to not visit any high-risk settings or vulnerable individuals for 10 days.
  • People who are unvaccinated, partially vaccinated or immunocompromised will still be required to isolate for 10 days.

Where can I find more information on vaccinations?

  • Algoma Public Health’s COVID-19 Vaccine information landing page
  • If you have questions and would like to speak directly to someone, please visit the Vax Facts website and book an appointment to speak to a professional.

Where can I get more information on children's vaccines?

The SickKids COVID-19 Vaccine Consult Service is a by-appointment phone service that provides a safe, judgment-free space to have an open conversation about the COVID-19 vaccine. This service provides expert guidance from Registered Nurses who are ready to listen and answer your questions or concerns related to the COVID-19 vaccine.

The COVID-19 Vaccine Consult Service supports residents of Ontario who:

  • Have specific questions or concerns related to the COVID-19 vaccine that you cannot find the answer to elsewhere.
  • Have complex medical histories or medical conditions (i.e. chronic illness)
  • Require additional support for their COVID-19 vaccine due to medical complexity, developmental disorder or mobility, communication, behavioural or other specialized needs, including significant needle phobia.

More information can be found by visiting https://www.sickkids.ca/vaccineconsult.

Who do I contact to clarify restrictions on my business or organization?
Algoma Public Health's Healthy Workplaces line 705-942-4646 x 3273
