City of Elliot Lake residents and those in the nine townships are permitted to have a campfire in approved backyard fire pits between April 1 and October 31 each year. You must meet special requirements before we can give you a burning permit.
It is important to be aware of the risk of accidental brush fire due to dry conditions. Learn more about the potential danger of wildfires in our area.
Get a burning permit by visiting the fire station at 55 Hillside Dr. N. or by calling 705-848-3232 for more information. A fire department officer must sign your permit.
Requirements for a burning permit
- $5 permit fee (cash only)
- Live in the City of Elliot Lake proper, or live/have a cottage in the nine townships
- Restrict burning to between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m.
- Do not burn if wind speeds are over 16 km/hour
- Only burn small, controlled fires with a maximum area of 0.226 m³ and 2 feet wide, 2 feet high and 2 feet deep
- An adult supervisor must oversee the fire at all times
- You must keep fire suppression tools with the fire at all times, like shovels, a water hose, bucket or pump
- You must not burn garbage or anything toxic or hazardous, like paint and pressure treated materials
- Keep all campfires more than 3 metres from any building, structure, hedge, highway, road, overhead wire or any other obstruction
- Rural residents in the nine townships must keep all land-clearing debris in piles separated by at least 4.57 metres or 15 feet
- Put out the fire completely when you are finished by dousing the fire and surrounding area with water and/or sand
It is your responsibility to ensure a safe campfire experience. The permit holder may responsible for Fire Department costs in fire extinguishing caused by your campfire.
