 What You Need to Know
  • A marriage licence is required to get married in Ontario (or the publication of banns from a church).
  • Appointments are required for obtaining a marriage licence. 
  • The completed application and applicable documents must be submitted prior to booking an appointment to obtain a marriage licence.
  • The licence is valid anywhere in the province of Ontario.
  • Once issued, a marriage licence is valid for 90 days.
 How to Apply for a Marriage Licence
 
  1. Review the identification requirements (listed below).

  2. Review guidelines on re-marrying after a divorce (listed below).

  3. Complete the Marriage application.

    • Submit the Marriage Licence Application.

    • If you are unable to submit the form online, or you prefer to use a paper version, or come to City Hall to obtain a Marriage Licence Application.

    • Please ensure you submit the following with the application:

      • 2 pieces of original and valid government issued ID for each person applying from the list of acceptable ID (see Identification Requirements below)
      • Divorce documentation, if needed
  4. Pick Up Your Marriage Licence In Person (25 - 30 minutes)

    The appointment to obtain your marriage licence will take approximately 25 - 30 minutes. After completing your application, you can obtain your processed marriage licence in the following ways:

    Reserve Your Timeslot in Advance:
    Online: Book an appointment once you submit the application online.
    Phone: Call 705-848-2287 ext. 2120 to book an appointment
    Email: Email us to book an appointment.

Marriage Licence Fee

The cost of a marriage licence is $154.50 (HST does not apply).
We accept cash, debit or cheque/money order made payable to “City of Elliot Lake”.

The marriage licence fee is non-refundable.

Who Can Get Married?

Anyone over the age of 16 years old can get married in Ontario. If you are under 18 years of age, you will need consent from your parents or legal guardians. A parental consent form must be completed. Forms are available in our office. Your parents or legal guardians must be present at the time you submit your marriage licence application.

Everyone is welcome to apply for a marriage licence and get married in Ontario, whether you live here permanently or temporarily. There are no gender, residency, citizenship or medical requirements when applying for a marriage licence. The requirements are the same for everyone.

 Identification Requirements

  • ID must provide your legal name and date of birth
  • Your first and last names must match the two presented pieces of ID
  • To have your middle name(s) included on your marriage licence it must also appear on both pieces of ID
  • ID on the list can be from any country, as long as it is government issued

Any two pieces from the following list of acceptable ID (one piece must include your photo):

  • Government issued Birth Certificate, including any change of name certificates
  • Valid Passport
  • Record of Immigrant Landing
  • Canadian Citizenship Card
  • Valid Driver’s Licence
  • Valid Ontario Photo Card (Purple Photo ID Card)
  • Health Cards and Social Insurance (S.I.N.) cards will not be accepted
Re-Marrying After Divorce
 
 Divorced in Canada

 You must submit documentation of the divorce when applying for a marriage licence. This can be the original or a court certified copy of a:

  • Final Decree
  • Certificate of Divorce

A certified copy of either of the above divorce documents may be obtained from the court office the granted the divorce.
A Decree Nisi, Divorce Order or Judgement is not acceptable.

Original documentation is required at the appointment and all documents will be returned.

 Divorced Outside of Canada (Foreign Divorce)
If you were divorced outside of Canada, you will need to provide certain documents to prove that you are no longer married.

The Office of the Registrar General for the Province of Ontario needs to validate these documents and provide authorization in order for you to get a marriage licence.

 Widow or Widower
 If either applicant is a widow or widower, they are not required to produce a death certificate to obtain a marriage licence.
