The City of Elliot Lake offers residents the opportunity to apply to have a City asset (street, park, neighbourhood, facility or room within) named or renamed to recognize the activities and significant contributions of a person, persons or family, to the community.
What can be (re)named:
Streets*
Parks
Trails
Neighbourhoods
Municipal Facilities
Rooms Within Municipal Facilities
* At the discretion of Council, streets will typically be assigned a ceremonial name as opposed to a full renaming to limit impact to emergency services.
The Process:
- Application
- Name review & approval- Staff
- Name review & approval - Council
- Council approval of asset (re)naming
- Public Consultation
- (Re)Naming of asset & ceremony (if applicable)
Application
Applications can be made by completing the the Online Asset Renaming Application, by requesting a copy via email, by picking up a paper copy at the City Hall Front Desk or by writing in a submission. All applications carry a $50 application fee. Applications specifically for street (re)naming must include documented support, including but not limited to, petitions and support letters from at least 75 percent of property owners that abut the street.
Name Review and Approval - Staff and Council
Name submissions will be reviewed by staff and must comply with the name principles criteria in the Asset Naming and Renaming Policy. Staff- approved names will be forwarded to the first Council meeting in March and if approved by Council will be added to the Names Reserves List. At that same meeting of Council, applications who's names have been approved will be considered.
Public Consultation Period
Council approved names will carry a 30-day public input period where objections may be submitted either through the online Naming Objection Form, or by obtaining a form from the City Hall or via email. Objections will be dealt with on a case by case basis with City Council determining the validity of the objection. Council has the right to overrule any objections.
Renaming of Asset
Upon conclusion of the public consultation period, staff will schedule a time for the renaming of the asset and if applicable, will coordinate a (re)naming ceremony. Cost of signs associated with renaming will be the responsibility of the City of Elliot Lake.
