Ruben Yli-Juuti Centre Update

Earlier today, a Special Council Meeting was held to update members of Council on the state of repair at the Ruben Yli-Juuti Centre.

Staff have been engaging with the City’s insurance adjusters on ways to expedite the investigation and repairs to the facility.  On Wednesday, Oct. 29th, City Staff received positive news from one of the adjusters that the on site portion of the investigation has now concluded and that City Staff may now begin repairs inside of the facility. The insurance investigation remains ongoing and there is currently no timeline for when the final findings will be ready for presentation, however it has been determined that repairs can begin to ensure that further down time at the pool be kept to a minimum.

With this information now in hand, City Staff recommended that Council approve moving forward with sourcing vendors to perform the necessary repair work. City Staff plan to work with vendors to determine a timeline for the project with the consideration of a phased approach to the repairs which would possibly allow the fitness center to re-open before the rest of the facility. These steps will help ensure that the facility can be reopened safely, efficiently, and in a manner that restores community access to key amenities as soon as feasible.

As a result of this Special Council Meeting, Council have approved City Staff to begin seeking vendors to complete the repairs with an upset budget limit of $500,000 to cover the repair costs.
